Cotswolds Country House
A refined and decadent finish for a formal space in this elegant Cotswold country house
The galleried ceiling and blank plaster walls in the dining room of this fine county house in the Cotswolds gave it an open airy feel however, the architect in this project had a vision to make the space feel altogether warmer and more cosy by defining the elevations through using beautiful natural oak wall panelling.
The style of panelling needed to match the period of the building and the objective for the design and finish was for the space to feel smart and sophisticated, but with the warmth of the oak shining through.

Our design team worked collaboratively with the architects to balance their objectives with a historically appropriate style and design
Working through the design process from initial meetings with the architect and client, and visits to site to get a feel for the space, we began with suggestions on panel layout, moulding details, carving styles and locations. We produced artistic concepts for each elevation to help show how the panels would work around doors and windows, and most importantly, help visualise how the layout would define the space.
The external door to the right of the fireplace needed careful thought as this had most impact on the balance of the room. A secret door to conceal the little used doorway helped keep the formality whilst preserving access through to the courtyard beyond.

This room was transformed by our panelling and it delivered on the aims of making this a warmer, cosier space with a very sophisticated feel
Our signature finish on this panelling brings out all of the amazing character in the carefully selected quarter sawn oak and the delicate carvings we have used on the frieze panels show the unmistakeable mark of craftsmanship. The traditional construction, all carefully hand-made, also marks this out as panelling of the very highest quality whilst our thorough design process and collaborative approach ensures we can deliver on the project aims.

A full height gate that would fill the span of the gap but wouldn't block out all of the light whilst fitting in with the elegance of the home
The gate itself is very similar to our Hildegard door; nailed and clenched construction using hand planed quarter sawn oak, then finished with a hand carved frame. Our designers love the freedom to be creative and design something that not only meets the functional brief, but looks exquisite too.
The spindles framing the gate were left quite rough and ununiform. They were designed to allow a view through to the garden and let the light through, but also add an element of privacy. The strap hinges were made by our blacksmith and nailed on to hold the weight of the gate, as well as add a further element of understated interest to the design, before being finished with a lead capping to protect against water ingress.
